ITHACA, NY

First Ithaca Chinese Christian Church

ADDRESS:  429 Mitchell Street Ithaca, NY 14850
PHONE:  (607) 272-8272

PASTOR/S:  Rev. Tony Hsu and Rev. David Wong

Founded in 1983 with Rev. David Wong as the founding pastor, the church has ministered to Asian university students at Cornell University. The church has grown over the years and after 17 years of holding services in Cantonese and Mandarin, an English service was added in 2000 for those students/faculty for whom English was their preferred language.

The church holds evangelism events in the fall to reach new students. There are fellowship groups that meet for discipleship all during the school year and a baptism service held in the spring. With a student population, there is always a lot of turnover in the church body but it keeps them active in advancing the gospel each school year.

There are many "alumni" of the church who have gone on from FICCC to serve as faithful church members in churches in the U.S. and all over Asia.

First Ithaca Chinese Christian Church

BROOKLYN, NY

Church Plant at Second EFC in Brooklyn, NY

Partnership with ANACEFC: ANACEFC (Association of North American Chinese Evangelical Free Churches) continues to provide support for this church plant within the Second EFC in Brooklyn. The Chinese EFC in Calgary, Canada has also been a great help.

Church Planters: Pastor Wayne and Cecilia Wong-Po

BRIEF HISTORY: It’s a church plant within the existing structure of Second EFC in Brooklyn, NY. As Second EFC has grown, Pastor Dave Gehret became increasingly burdened for the thousands of Chinese right outside the doors of the church. The church prayed fervently that God would send them a staff person who could bond with the existing staff of the church and be the pastor of the Chinese ministry. Wayne, Cecilia and others have used Tai Chi exercise classes, English classes, and pancake breakfasts to attract those in the neighborhood to the church. Youth are ministered to by the multicultural youth ministry at Second EFC.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS:

  • In 2006, 10 people accepted Christ as their Savior through the seeds planted over the year and the special outreaches of a team from the Calgary Chinese Church in Alberta, Canada. They are following up on these contacts.
  • A good strategy meeting with our core group to go over vision and goals.
  • In addition to family nights on Friday night, they have started Bible Study and prayer on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month. They hope to use this for follow-up training and to build up the core group.
  • They have been encouraged by the joint fellowship and outreaches among the evangelical Chinese churches in the 8th Ave. area of Brooklyn.

BRIEF HISTORY: This church was born out of ministry in the Chinese garment factories of Manhattan. It is a church with many working class Cantonese-speaking Chinese immigrants. In the 1990’s, Grace Mo and Rebecca Lee ministered in five different garment factories in Manhattan. As the ministry bore fruit in changed lives, they began to sense that a church plant would provide a place for nurturing and growth for these new believers. New York Chinese EFC was accepted as a church planting project in November 1998, and the first steering committee meeting was in January of 1999. Almost everyone in the church is a new believer, coming to Christ out of a culture of idol worship. That is exciting, but it also means there will be a longer process for developing indigenous leaders in the church. The first few believers came from the garment factory ministry, but new believers now are coming from extended family and other contacts.

New York Chinese EFC

Mel Leung was the first pastor of the church and served for two years. Samuel Wu then served for two years before sharing pastoral duties with Rev. KC Ng. Currently the church receives pastoral help from the Rutgers Christian Community Church in NJ. This church has an attendance of 3,000 and there are 2-3 leaders who rotate preaching responsibilities while NY Chinese EFC looks for a new pastor. The church has continued to grow even during this time.

New York Chinese EFC

ANACEFC (Association of North American Chinese EFCs) provided funding for the church at the outset, but that support has stopped. Outside gifts help this church to meet its budget, but the church is moving to greater and greater financial stability and independence.

In the past two years, several Mandarin-speaking families have come to the church and services now are conducted in both Cantonese and Mandarin.

Dorcas Ministries

Dorcas Ministries was established to bring the gospel to the immigrant Chinese Community in the garment factories of NYC. Grace Mo and Rebecca Lee have given years of leadership to Dorcas Ministries. Our New York Chinese EFC was birthed with new believers out of this ministry. In 2005, a ministry center was established in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and currently there are more than 100 immigrants attending ESL classes with a waiting list of another 100! They have ministered to children through a summer VBS ministry and have received several computers to help teach computer literacy.

They are a non-profit ministry under the Eastern District. Grace is the Executive Director who donates her time to the ministry. Rebecca is the Program Director and is supported as a missionary to the Chinese people in NY. As Dorcas grows, there is a need for helping to pay part-time staff to meet the growing ministry needs. Please consider adding Dorcas Ministries to your mission budget or giving a one-time gift. Grace and Rebecca are also available to come to your church to share about the ministry.

Here is the Dorcas Ministries website. www.dorcas-nyc.org (Currently, the site is mainly written in Chinese.)
