Ministry Teams
Learn about missions by having missionaries share in your churches. That’s good.
Learn about missions by experiencing missions first hand! That’s better!
There are opportunities to send missions teams overseas and we hope your church does that. But as you look around you, remember that there are also many opportunities to minister cross-culturally right here in our district churches. And while you are ministering to others, you will also be ministered to by those who are serving God in pretty remarkable ways.
VBS:
After all the preparation of doing a VBS at your church, why not be good stewards of all that preparation and send a team to do it a second time at one of our urban/intercultural churches! It’s a great project for youth and adults. Here are some of the churches who would love to host your group for a week during the summer.
Contact Roy Larsen at the Eastern District (610-395-9034) for more info or contact these churches directly.

ESL (English as a Second Language):
Those who are new to our country desire to learn English. Often the cost of lessons is a barrier. Another barrier may be their work schedule. With some basic training, you may be able to help Chinese, Arabic, Spanish or other language groups learn English.
- Once a week: If you are close enough to commute to one of our churches, consider having 2-3 people come once a week to one of our ESL programs. This is a great opportunity for women who are free during the day and retired couples. Here are a couple of opportunities for such an arrangement:
Arab American Friendship Center in Brooklyn
Dorcas Ministries (Chinese) in Brooklyn
Vroom St. EFC in Jersey City, NJ
- A week during the summer for an "English learning camp": this could be during the day or evening and you can commute each day or stay at the host church.
Other Ideas:
- A sports week at an urban or intercultural church: play basketball, soccer and other sports with kids from that church and share testimonies, devotions.
- A music camp with people teaching musical instruments and perhaps preparing a musical to perform for the church/their families.
- One church has sent ladies to teach quilting to ladies from our Chinese EFC. What other skills might your church have that can build relational bridges?
- Computer training: many immigrants would love to learn some basic computer literacy skills.
- Others - try us and see if we can find a match.
