History: In December, 1890, eight Swedish immigrants began meeting in Dover, NJ with the purpose of forming a mission association. Throughout its growth, services were conducted in Swedish until 1931. The church relocated to its present Randolph Township location in 1962 as the church outgrew its previous facilities. In October, 1991, the Bethlehem Church was accepted into the Association of Evangelical Free Churches of America. In 2006, after several joint meetings with the ministry teams and boards of Bethlehem Church and its sister church, Cornerstone EFC in Morris Twp., NJ, it became apparent that the churches could serve the greater Morris County area more effectively together than separately. In July, 2006, Cornerstone EFC merged with Bethlehem Church and today continues its ministry at the same site in Morris Twp., as the church’s Cornerstone Campus.
Congregation: Initially the congregation was made up of Swedish laborers, farmers and builders. As the community needs changed to suburban living, the congregation added more professional and white collar workers, mirroring the changes in the community. The surrounding rural farms and woodlands have now become a series of developments to provide housing for largely middle class professional and white collar families.
In the last few years, Bethlehem Church has experienced a growing ministry, and remains excited to see what the Lord has planned for them in the days to come. From its two Morris County locations, on Route 10 in Randolph and West Hanover Ave. in Morris Township, Bethlehem Church is well-situated to continue to grow, and to connect with the entire Morris County community.
Mission: Bethlehem Church exists to glorify God by developing devoted followers of Jesus Christ who intentionally pursue Christ-like character in their personal lives, family lives, church, community, and world. (Matthew 28:18-20, Colossians 1:28-29)
Core Values: These are foundational to the activities of Bethlehem Church.
- We value Biblical teaching
Effective teaching and modeling of Biblical truth changes us and enables us to live a life of godliness. (John 17:17, Acts 2:42-47)
- We value prayer
Prayer is the foundation for life-changing ministry, our communication with Him and His guiding us. (Acts 2:42, I Thessalonians 5:16-18)
- We value discipleship
Followers of Christ are called to equip one another for faithful service. We follow His perfect example, striving for excellence in all we do to further the Kingdom. It is an activity that guides individuals to become spiritually mature and reproduce passionate and mature followers of Christ. (Luke 9:23, Romans 12, I Corinthians 12, Philippians 2:3-5, Colossians 1:28)
- We value evangelism
Unbelieving people matter to God. Because everyone needs the Savior, our love and concern for people is evidenced in our efforts to reach people next door and around the world. (Acts 2:47, Luke 5:30-32)
- We value worship
Dynamic worship directed to God engages our heart, mind, and emotions. As a result, we live in joyous awareness of His awesome presence. (Psalm 100, Matthew 22:37, Romans 12:1, Hebrews 12:28, Revelation 15:3-4)
- We value community and family
Members of the body of Christ value one another. A healthy family is the foundation of a healthy church. Loving relationships permeate our families and our congregation. As a result, we are united in thought, word and deed. (John 13:34-35, I Timothy 1:5, Hebrews 10:24, I Corinthians 12:2, I Corinthians 13)
- We value accountability
We take responsibility for the growth of other believers as Christians (Hebrews 10:24-25).
