The vision of the Eastern District Church Planting Initiative is to actively cooperate with God in His church planting movement through the prayerful, strategic and diligent birthing of many new reproducing churches.

The Scope

The Eastern District targets six states (Eastern New York, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia) to fulfill the Great Commission mandate to make disciples among all peoples. In a District with four of the major urban centers in our country (New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.) as well as significant suburban and rural areas, the Eastern District has over 39 million people to reach. Currently, approximately one percent of this population attends EFCA congregations. There is plenty of room for growth through starting new churches. Given our location, it is possible to target and plant healthy, reproducing churches among many of the people groups from around the globe who have found their way to our doorsteps.

The Process

Church planting is not for the faint hearted. It often is hard, faith stretching work. But God is calling some to step up and be sent into one of the toughest and yet most rewarding mission fields there is: The Eastern District!

Do I Have What it Takes?

Do you believe God may be calling you into church planting with us? Take the Self-Assessment survey and then give us a call.

Do I Fit?

We are excited to be able to work with those whom God is calling to plant churches in the Eastern District. To understand the process of becoming an Eastern District church planter, please see the Planter Development section.

What Are My Options?

The District has targeted several opportunities for a church to be planted and there are more opportunities being formed.

We have found that most of the plants over recent years have begun as God has spoken into the heart of one of our churches to start a mother/daughter plant, or into the heart of an individual with a burden to plant a church in a specific area. Click here for a list of current church plants.

If you feel that God may be leading you to plant a church with the Eastern District of the EFCA, please direct your inquiries by contacting our District office and ask for Eastern District Associate Superintendent Peter Johnson (you can also e-mail him at pjohnson@edaefca.org). For more church planting information from the EFCA, please visit the national church planting website at www.efcastartchurches.org.

Tackle Box for Church Planting in the Eastern District

We have been called to be fishers of men in Matthew 4:19. Every good fisherman needs a tackle box filled with tools to be successful.
